Foo Fighters is Dave Grohl who, after Nirvana, picks up the guitar and the mic, and turns a solo project into a machine for stadium anthems.
In 1994, a few months after Kurt Cobain's death, Nirvana's drummer locked himself in the studio and recorded a first album almost alone. He then surrounded himself with a band; thirty years later, Foo Fighters is an institution of American rock, with eleven albums and a handful of Grammy Awards.
The sound has not changed much: melodic, powerful rock built for choruses sung back by the crowd — "Everlong", "The Pretender", "Best of You". The band's strength lies elsewhere, on stage: three-hour concerts, an energy few bands sustain at this level.
After the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022, the band held two giant tribute concerts and then went back on the road with Josh Freese. At festivals, Foo Fighters play the Saturday-night headline slots, the ones that close the main stage.
