The emblematic figure of British grime, from Boy Better Know to the Mercury Prize.
Biography.
The journey and inspirations that shape Skepta's world.
A co-founder of Boy Better Know, Skepta carried London grime to the top of the charts and the Mercury Prize.
Born Joseph Junior Adenuga in 1982 in Tottenham, north London, Skepta grew up in the pirate radio scene that gave birth to grime in the early 2000s.
A co-founder of the Boy Better Know collective with his brother Jme, he established himself as one of the most respected voices in the genre, between technical flow and a sense of the punchline.
His album Konnichiwa (2016), carried by the singles "That's Not Me" and "Shutdown", won the Mercury Prize and brought grime into the international mainstream, beyond British borders.
On stage, Skepta stays true to the raw energy of grime — few frills, a lot of presence — and keeps touring hip-hop and electro stages around the world.
