The band that relit New York garage rock at the turn of the 2000s.
Biography.
The journey and inspirations that shape The Strokes's world.
The Strokes relaunched New York garage rock with a first album that remains an absolute reference of the genre.
Formed in New York in 1998 around Julian Casablancas, Nick Valensi, Albert Hammond Jr., Nikolai Fraiture and Fabrizio Moretti — most of whom met on the benches of the same high school.
Their first album, "Is This It" (2001), carried by "Last Nite" and "Hard to Explain", is unanimously cited as the trigger of the early-2000s garage rock revival, alongside The White Stripes and Interpol.
"Room on Fire" (2003) and its track "Reptilia" confirmed their status, before a decade marked by solo projects and long gaps between records.
A notable return in 2020 with "The New Abnormal", awarded the Grammy for Best Rock Album — proof that their sound hasn't aged a day.
