The London minimalist whisper that redefined 2010s indie pop.
Biography.
The journey and inspirations that shape The xx's world.
The xx made silence and next-to-nothing a sonic signature, carried by two voices answering each other in low tones.
Formed in London in 2005 around Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim, school friends, the band lays its minimalist vocals over the pared-back pads of Jamie xx, already producing while still a teenager.
Their first album, "xx" (2009), won the Mercury Prize and established a bare-bones sound — sparse guitar, round bass, drum machine — carried by "Crystalised" and "Islands".
"Coexist" (2012) and then "I See You" (2017) gradually opened their sound towards the dance floor, in parallel with the solo career of Jamie xx, who became one of the most sought-after producer-DJs of his generation.
On stage, this studio restraint becomes a collective whisper: entire venues and festival stages holding their breath for a band that never raises its voice.
