Norman Cook, the historic figure of big beat, still getting crowds dancing from Brighton.
Biography.
The journey and inspirations that shape Fatboy Slim's world.
Norman Cook took big beat from the clubs of Brighton to the world's biggest beaches.
Norman Cook started out as the bassist of the indie band The Housemartins in the 1980s, before diving into Brighton club culture and stringing together aliases (Beats International, Freak Power) until adopting the name Fatboy Slim in 1996.
With the album You've Come a Long Way, Baby (1998) and its hit "Praise You", he established big beat — a crossover of breakbeat, samples and big basslines — on radios and in clubs around the world.
His free concert on Brighton beach in 2002, which drew several hundred thousand people, remains one of the symbols of his status: a DJ able to turn any place into a giant party.
Nearly thirty years after his debut, he keeps touring the biggest festivals in a Hawaiian shirt, true to a set of revisited classics and big festive surges.
