The inventors of trip hop, born in Bristol, between heavy bass, melancholy and commitment.
Biography.
The journey and inspirations that shape Massive Attack's world.
From Bristol, Massive Attack gave birth to trip hop, a slow, dark and cinematic music.
Massive Attack was born in Bristol in 1988 around Robert Del Naja (3D), Grant Marshall (Daddy G) and Andrew Vowles (Mushroom), from the city's sound system scene; Tricky took part in the first records.
Blue Lines (1991) laid the foundations of trip hop with "Unfinished Sympathy", then Protection (1994) and above all Mezzanine (1998) — carried by "Teardrop", sung by Elizabeth Fraser — established a darker sound, mixing hip-hop, dub, soul and electric guitars.
Each album relies on numerous guests, with the voice of Horace Andy as a common thread, which gives the group an identity in constant evolution rather than a fixed sound.
On stage, its concerts combine music with visual messages on political and social current affairs: the band is known for its commitment and for shows with a strong emotional charge.
