A pop-up city of 70,000 people that rises in the Nevada desert and then vanishes without a trace: eight days of art, music and counterculture, August 29 to September 6, 2027.
Burning Man takes place every summer in the Nevada desert, north of Reno. It isn't a classic music festival: it's a pop-up city of nearly 70,000 people, built entirely by its participants, that rises for eight days and then disappears without leaving the slightest trace behind. The 2027 edition, themed “Spellbound,” runs from August 29 to September 6. Monumental art, electronic music across dozens of sound camps, and the final burning of “the Man” that gives the event its name.
The founding principle is “radical self-reliance”: every participant must bring everything they need (water, food, shelter) and leave without a trace of waste. The event also runs without money — aside from ice and coffee for sale, everything happens through gifting or barter. The music, mostly electronic, plays continuously across dozens of sound camps scattered through the city, with no lineup announced in advance like a classic festival.
The high point remains the burning of the giant “Man” sculpture at the end of the week, followed by the burning of the Temple, a space for collective reflection. The desert sets its own rules: crushing heat by day, very cold nights, sudden dust storms — proper gear isn't optional.
