The Ardennes' eco-responsible festival, in Charleville-Mézières, in late August. Four days at Square Bayard, ~125,000 festival-goers, a contemporary music lineup (rock, rap, electronic) and an environmental charter upheld since 2005. Its name comes from a poem by Rimbaud, a local son. Next edition from 19 to 22 August 2027.
Le Cabaret Vert was born in 2005 in Charleville-Mézières, on the initiative of the FLaP association. Its name nods to Arthur Rimbaud, the city's poet, and his sonnet “Au Cabaret-Vert.” From its first edition, the festival signed an environmental charter: it made this its trademark and has since served as an eco-responsible lab for the industry. Four days in late August, at Square Bayard on the banks of the Meuse, ~125,000 festival-goers, a contemporary lineup blending rock, rap, electronic and pop, French and international.
The environmental commitment is concrete: local and plant-based food given priority, equipment reuse, waste and water management, audience awareness campaigns, a published carbon footprint. The festival was long ahead of the rest of the industry, and many of its practices have become standard.
The site is in the city, by the river, backed against the Ardennes massif. You can camp (a dedicated zone) or stay in Charleville and head home each night. Late August, the Ardennes weather is cool and changeable: it can be sunny and 25°C or rainy and 15°C — come prepared for both. Charleville-Mézières is worth the detour for its Place Ducale (a sister to Paris's Place des Vosges) and its Rimbaud heritage.
