The big festival of French-language song, in the city of La Rochelle, in mid-July. Five days, several stages including the Grande Scène at the Vieux-Port, ~150,000 festival-goers, and the balance between headliners and new discoveries that's been its trademark since 1985. Next edition from 10 to 14 July 2027.
Launched in 1985 by broadcaster Jean-Louis Foulquier, the Francofolies turn La Rochelle into the capital of French-language song every mid-July. The principle hasn't changed: booking mainstream headliners, rising artists and complete newcomers side by side, across several stages spread through the city. The Grande Scène, set up near the Vieux-Port, draws 15,000 to 25,000 people a night; in total, more than 150,000 festival-goers pass through the festival over five days.
It's an urban, seaside festival: you walk from one stage to another in a listed port city, between medieval towers and café terraces. No camping, no single enclosed site — you stay in a hotel or rental, heading back each night. The daytime belongs to the city and the beach, concerts start in the late afternoon.
The lineup remains the heart of it: the Francofolies are as much a launchpad as a showcase, with many major French-language artists having played their first big stages here. The festival also runs a program supporting emerging artists (the “Chantier des Francos”), whose winners turn up on the bill in following years.

Capacity, atmosphere, crowd, hours and on-site budget: the full profile of Les Francofolies de La Rochelle 2027 before you get your tickets.
Founded in 1985 by Jean-Louis Foulquier, the festival has become the institution for French-language song: an almost obligatory stop for Francophone artists, from headliners to complete beginners.
The balance is the trademark: the Grande Scène for the big names, smaller stages for developing artists. The “Chantier des Francos” supports emerging acts year-round.
Vieux-Port, the Chaîne / Saint-Nicolas / Lanterne towers, the Encan district. You walk between stages, in one of France's most beautiful festival settings.
You stay in a hotel or rental in or around La Rochelle, heading back to sleep each night. The daytime is free: the beach, Île de Ré, the aquarium.
22-28°C by day, mild evenings but with a sea breeze. Light summer clothing, a layer for the evening, comfortable shoes (a lot of walking in the city), sunscreen for the beach in the afternoon.
The main cost is accommodation: La Rochelle in July is expensive and books up months ahead. The discovery stages are cheap or even free.
Dates, hours, transport and lodging: what you need to know before you go.
Five days, from Saturday 10 to Wednesday 14 July 2027 (dates confirmed on the official site). Concerts from late afternoon until late, spread across several stages in the city — you build your own route.
At francofolies.fr: per-evening tickets for the Grande Scène, passes, reduced rates for discovery stages. Evenings with the biggest headliners sell fast.
Cashless at enclosed venues via the wristband; cards accepted everywhere in the city.
La Rochelle's train station is downtown (direct TGV from Paris 2h30, Bordeaux 2h, Nantes 2h). Most stages are walkable from the station. La Rochelle-Île de Ré airport 10 minutes away. A car is of little use and parking is hard in July.
Accessible platforms at the main stages, adapted routes downtown (largely flat), dedicated reception. Register in advance via the website.
