The big jazz event at the Roman theatre in Vienne, 30km from Lyon, late June to early July. Two weeks, more than 200,000 festival-goers, paid evenings in a 7,000-seat Roman amphitheatre — and three-quarters of the concerts free, across the whole town. Launched in 1981. Next edition from 25 June to 10 July 2027 (46th).
Jazz à Vienne was born in 1981, on the initiative of Jean-Paul Boutellier, at Vienne's Roman theatre — a 1st-century amphitheatre backed against the Pipet hill, with around 7,000 seats. It has become one of the world's great jazz festivals: two weeks in late June to early July, a lineup spanning classic jazz to hip-hop, blues, soul and world music. The big paid evenings are held at the Roman theatre; but nearly three-quarters of the roughly 170 concerts are free, spread across other stages in town. More than 200,000 festival-goers combined every summer.
Two festivals coexist: the “evening” festival, at the Roman theatre, booked concert by concert (evenings start around 8:30pm, open seating on the stone tiers); and the “town” festival, free, with the Club de Minuit, the open-air stages, the jam sessions — enough music from morning to night without paying a cent.
Late June to early July in the Rhône valley, it's hot (28–32°C, sometimes more) and often humid in the evening. Bring water, a cushion for the stone tiers, and a light layer in case the mistral picks up. Vienne is small: everything is walkable.

Capacity, atmosphere, crowd, hours and on-site budget: the full profile of Jazz à Vienne 2027 before you get your tickets.
Vienne's Roman theatre, built in the 1st century, backed against the Pipet hill. Natural acoustics, stone tiers, a stage facing the sunset: one of Europe's most beautiful concert venues.
The lineup starts from jazz but opens up widely. The Roman theatre hosts the headliners; the town's stages host new discoveries and jams.
Nearly 75% of the roughly 170 concerts are free: open-air daytime stages, the Club de Minuit, jam sessions. You can experience the festival for several days without buying a ticket.
Founded by Jean-Paul Boutellier, Jazz à Vienne has hosted the biggest names in world jazz and made Vienne a capital of the genre every summer.
28–32°C, humid evenings, possible mistral winds. Bring water, a cushion or blanket for the tiers, a light layer for the night.
The heart of the festival costs nothing. Evenings at the Roman theatre are booked individually; the real cost is accommodation in Vienne or Lyon during peak season.
Dates, hours, transport and lodging: what you need to know before you go.
