Arrive fresh in Marciac.
Flight, train, bus or carpooling: compare the options side by side with your real dates. The idea is to arrive with a bit of battery left — you included.

France's biggest jazz festival, in a village of 1,200 people in the heart of Gers, late July to early August. Free concerts on the village square all day, big paid evenings under the big top or at L'Astrada — up to 250,000 festival-goers combined every season. Launched in 1978. Next edition in 2027 (49th, dates to be confirmed).
Jazz in Marciac was born in 1978, when a concert by trumpeter Bill Coleman gave André Muller and Jean-Louis Guilhaumon the idea of making it an annual event. Almost fifty years on, this 1,200-person village in Gers draws up to 250,000 festival-goers combined every summer and attracts the biggest names in world jazz — from Wynton Marsalis, a regular since 1991, to Sting, Diana Krall or Pat Metheny.
The festival runs on two registers at once. By day, the village square turns into a continuous free stage from 11:30am to 7pm: concerts, jam sessions, a village-fête atmosphere, no money changing hands. By night, the big names play under the big top set up on the sports ground (up to 11,000 standing) or at L'Astrada, the 500-seat venue opened in 2011 — the first in France certified as a year-round “scène de musiques actuelles” dedicated to jazz.
Marciac is tiny and rural: no train station in the village, the nearest ones are 40km (Tarbes), 47km (Auch) or 66km (Pau) away, connected by festival shuttles at €2 a ride. It's the price of experiencing the festival in a real Gascon village rather than on an out-of-town site — as long as you plan the journey, by car or train + shuttle.

Capacity, atmosphere, crowd, hours and on-site budget: the full profile of Jazz in Marciac 2027 before you get your tickets.
Founded by André Muller and Jean-Louis Guilhaumon, who still runs the artistic programming today — from a single concert to a world-class festival in half a century.
Marciac, a small Gers village, turns into the world capital of jazz for a season every summer — a historic peak of 260,000 festival-goers in 2014.
The free programme runs from 11:30am to 7pm on the village square; the big paid evenings are held under the big top (up to 11,000 standing) or at L'Astrada.
The American trumpeter hasn't missed a single edition since 1991, and even composed the “Marciac Suite” especially for the festival.
Opened in 2011, this 500-seat venue dedicated to jazz all year round has made Marciac much more than a summer-only event.
L'Astrada starts around €30-32, the big top from €46-51 up to €85 standing for headliners — but most of the programme stays accessible without a ticket.
Dates, hours, transport and lodging: what you need to know before you go.
About 17 days, late July to early August (2026: July 20 to August 5). Free concerts on the village square from 11:30am to 7pm; paid evenings under the big top or at L'Astrada. 2027 dates not yet officially announced.
At jazzinmarciac.com once the lineup is announced (usually in February). L'Astrada from around €30-32, the big top from €46-51 up to over €80 standing for headliners.
Most of the festival — the village square concerts — is free. The real expense is the big-top evenings and accommodation in peak season, in an area with limited supply.
No train station in Marciac itself: Tarbes (40km), Auch (47km) and Pau (66km) are the nearest stations. The festival runs shuttles at €2 a ride from Tarbes (line 961) and Auch (line 931).
A dedicated “Access in Marciac” team welcomes people with disabilities, with a raised accessible viewing area set up under the big top and adapted pricing.
