The world's 2nd biggest annual jazz festival, on the shores of Lake Geneva in Switzerland — and much more than jazz since the 1970s: rock, pop, blues, world music. Two weeks of concerts, more than 200,000 festival-goers. Launched in 1967. 2027 edition from 2 to 17 July (61st edition).
The Montreux Jazz Festival was born in 1967, driven by Claude Nobs, Géo Voumard and René Langel, on the shores of Lake Geneva. Despite its name, the festival quickly moved beyond jazz alone to embrace rock, pop, blues, funk, hip-hop and world music — becoming the world's second-biggest annual jazz festival after Montreal's, while remaining one of Europe's most eclectic music events. Over two weeks, more than 200,000 festival-goers pack into the Auditorium Stravinski, the Montreux Jazz Lab and the open-air stages by the lake.
Montreux owes part of its legend to an incident: in 1971, a fire ravaged the Casino during a Frank Zappa concert, an event immortalised by Deep Purple in “Smoke on the Water,” one of the most famous riffs in rock.
Unlike a classic single-ticket festival, Montreux runs on individual shows and packages — you build your own lineup from dozens of concerts spread across the various halls and stages.

No isolated site here: the festival is experienced in Montreux itself, between concert halls and stages opening onto Lake Geneva.
A ranking earned despite (or thanks to) its openness to genres far from traditional jazz.
