Chicago's big festival, early August 2027 at Grant Park: four days of concerts with the Loop's skyscrapers as a backdrop, an all-genre lineup and around 100,000 people a day.
Lollapalooza 2027 takes place in early August at Grant Park, right in downtown Chicago. Born in 1991 as a touring festival dreamed up by Perry Farrell, it became a fixed Chicago event in 2005: four days of concerts across about ten stages, a lineup spanning rock to rap by way of pop and electronic, and around 100,000 people a day, with the Loop's skyline right behind the stages. Exact dates will be confirmed in the fall.
Lollapalooza invented a formula that many festivals have since copied: a big all-genre lineup, an easy-to-reach urban site, and razor-sharp organisation across four days. The two main stages face each other on either side of Buckingham Fountain, and the rest of the park fills up with mid-size stages, a kids' area (Kidzapalooza) and food trucks from across the city.
The backdrop is Chicago itself: the skyscrapers of Michigan Avenue, Lake Michigan a short walk away, and a city you can explore in the morning before the gates open. No camping — you stay in a hotel or rental, in the Loop or neighbouring areas well served by the elevated train.
