The world's biggest music festival by attendance, in Rabat (Morocco), in June. Nine days, between 2.5 and 3.75 million visits combined, ~90% of concerts free on the city's public stages. Launched in 2001. Next edition June 2027 (dates to be confirmed).
Mawazine (“Rhythms” in Arabic) was born in 2001 in Rabat, run by the Maroc Cultures association. Nine days in June, across about ten stages spread throughout the city — the OLM Souissi international stage, the Chellah stage on the archaeological site, the Nahda stage, and many more. It's the world's biggest music festival by number of attendees: between 2.5 and 3.75 million people depending on the edition, the overwhelming majority there for the free concerts. The lineup blends international stars, major Arab voices and the Moroccan scene, in a spirit of cultural dialogue the festival openly embraces.
The economic model is unique among the world's major festivals: around 90% of concerts are completely free, on public stages open to everyone. A few evenings at the OLM Souissi international stage are paid (300 to 1,400 dirhams depending on category, ~€28 to €130), with a very high-end VIP package (“Black Card”) for privileged access across the whole festival.
With free stages that can draw very dense crowds, it's best to arrive early for the most anticipated headliners, identify exits and avoid crowd surges at peak times — basic caution for any big free open-air gathering. Rabat in June is hot and dry, with a pleasant Atlantic breeze in the evening.
