The multidisciplinary festival at the Gallo-Roman theatre of Fourvière, in Lyon, all summer long. From late May to late July, ~120 performances — concerts, theatre, circus, dance — in a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheatre and about ten other venues. Launched in 1946. Next edition in 2027 (dates to be confirmed).
Les Nuits de Fourvière is one of France's oldest festivals: the first edition dates back to 1946. The setting is unique — the Grand théâtre gallo-romain de Fourvière, an amphitheatre nearly 2,000 years old carved into the hillside, and the neighbouring Odéon, on the listed archaeological site overlooking Lyon. Every summer, from late May to late July, the festival programs nearly 120 performances there: around forty concerts (rock, chanson, world music, classical), but also theatre, contemporary circus and dance. Produced by the Métropole de Lyon, it extends to about ten other venues across the metro area.
Here, an “evening” means a single show: you don't come to spend three days on one site, you pick one or more dates from a lineup spread over two months. The big evenings at the Grand théâtre usually start around 8:30pm, outdoors, often with open seating on the stone tiers.
The site sits up on the hill of Fourvière: you get there by funicular from Vieux-Lyon, by bus, or on foot up the (steep) climbs. The tiers are stone — bring a cushion or a small blanket. In case of rain, some evenings are postponed or moved; the update is given on the day.

The Grand théâtre gallo-romain de Fourvière and the Odéon, on the listed archaeological site overlooking Lyon. One of Europe's most beautiful open-air venues.
Around forty concerts (rock, chanson, world music, classical) but also theatre, contemporary circus and dance: the festival covers the full range of live performance.
Founded just after the war as a drama festival, it has opened up to every discipline and is now produced by the Métropole de Lyon.
No 3-day pass, no camping: you book one or more dates from a lineup spread over nearly two months, like a season of shows.
Bring a cushion or blanket (the tiers are stone), a warm layer for the evening up on the hill, and something for a possible shower — some evenings are postponed in case of rain.
Price depends on the show and category. No multi-day accommodation to share: you come for one evening. Lyon offers a wide range of accommodation at every price point.
