Pukkelpop was born in 1985 in Leopoldsburg as a modest one-day evening gathering seven bands in front of 2,500 spectators. Forty years on, it's become Belgium's second biggest festival, based at Festivalpark Kiewit near Hasselt, with a resolutely eclectic lineup — rock, indie, electronic, hip-hop and metal sit side by side with no hierarchy, mixing big international names and sharp discoveries. The festival also remains marked by the tragedy of August 18, 2011, when a sudden storm collapsed several structures, killing 5 and injuring 140 — an episode that durably strengthened weather-safety protocols at every major European festival.
Pukkelpop has a reputation as a talent scout: its lineup deliberately mixes rising artists with already-established headliners, a booking policy that makes it a benchmark for spotting the next big names.
The Kiewit site, a wooded leisure area near Hasselt, allows on-site camping — most of the crowd comes for the full four-day experience rather than a single evening.
