One of Europe's biggest all-genre festivals, on Óbuda Island in Budapest, in mid-August. Five days, ~400,000 festival-goers, more than 1,000 performances across around forty stages — music, but also theatre, circus and film. Born in 1993 as a student festival. Next edition August 10 to 14, 2027.
Sziget was born in 1993 under the name Diáksziget ("Students' Island"), carried by the wave of freedom following the end of communism in Hungary. Since then, the festival has taken over all of Óbuda Island, around 100 hectares in the middle of the Danube, and become one of the very first all-genre gatherings in Europe: five days in mid-August, more than 1,000 performances across around forty stages and spaces — music of course, but also theatre, circus, film and street arts. Nicknamed "the island of freedom," Sziget draws a very international crowd: around half of festival-goers come from abroad, mostly Western Europe.
The format is unique in Europe: you camp on the island for five days, with beaches on the Danube, floating saunas, markets and dozens of themed spaces to discover by day before the evening concerts. The scale of the site (an entire island) makes it almost a pop-up mini-city.
Budapest is right next door: HÉV bus or shuttle boat connects downtown to the island in 20-30 minutes, handy for those who prefer staying in the city rather than camping. In mid-August, Hungarian heat can be intense (30°C and above) with possible thunderstorms.
