A music and film festival in Gothenburg's big wooded park, known for spotting artists who break through the following year as much as for its big headliners. Three days right in the city, sold out across every category for the first time in 19 years in 2026.
Way Out West takes place every August at Slottsskogen, a big wooded park at the heart of Gothenburg nicknamed "the city's lung." Created in 2007, the festival has blended music and film from the start, and has built a reputation as both a talent scout and a showcase for global headliners — Prince, Kendrick Lamar, Frank Ocean, Tame Impala and Chappell Roan have all played here.
The lineup leans indie and demanding pop, with regular forays into hip-hop and electronic. Way Out West has a reputation for booking artists a year or two before their international breakthrough, making it a gathering closely watched by the curious as much as by fans of established big names. In 2026, the festival sold out across every category for the first time in its 19-year history.
The setting is resolutely urban: no camping, no rural isolation — Slottsskogen is a real park right in the city, a few minutes' walk from central Gothenburg. A film strand rounds out the music lineup, a fairly rare feature among major European festivals. Swedish summer in mid-August stays mild: better bring a warm layer for the evenings.
