Japan's biggest rock festival, at the Naeba ski resort, deep in the mountains, in late July. Three days surrounded by forest, 100,000 to 150,000 festival-goers, a rock lineup that opens up to electronic, jazz and world music. Launched in 1997. Next edition late July 2027 (dates to be confirmed).
Fuji Rock Festival was born in 1997, its very first edition held at the foot of Mount Fuji (hence its name), before moving as early as 1999 to the Naeba ski resort, in the mountains of Niigata, where it has been held ever since. It's Japan's biggest rock festival: three days in late July, 100,000 to 150,000 festival-goers, several stages scattered through the forest and across the summer ski slopes. The name says “rock,” but the lineup opens up widely to electronic, jazz, world music and the Japanese scene.
The setting is one of the most spectacular on the global festival circuit: green mountains, forests, rivers, morning mist. Walking between stages is part of the experience, some of them tucked away in nature several hundred metres apart.
Japan brings its own codes: punctuality, impeccable cleanliness (you leave with your own trash), orderly queuing and respect for others' space — a much calmer atmosphere than most big Western festivals. In late July, humidity and heat run high, and mountain rain is never far off.
