One festival, two cities: the same lineup plays the same weekend in Chiba (Tokyo) and Osaka, with artists alternating between the two stages. Up to 300,000 people combined, one of Asia's biggest music events.
Summer Sonic is a concept unique in the world: the same festival, with the same lineup, takes place the same weekend in two Japanese cities — Chiba, at the gates of Tokyo, and Osaka. Artists shuttle back and forth between the two stages, a principle close to Rock am Ring and Rock im Park's in Germany. With up to 300,000 people combined, it's one of Asia's biggest international music festivals. The 2027 edition has no dates announced yet; the festival traditionally takes place in mid-August.
The lineup mixes big international names (rock, pop, electronic) and the Japanese scene, across several stages including Chiba Stadium's "Marine Stage," on Tokyo Bay. The format changed in 2026, moving from two to three days for the Chiba/Tokyo leg — an expansion that could be confirmed for future editions.
With no camping, Summer Sonic is experienced in the city: the vast majority of the crowd stays in hotels, in Tokyo or Osaka depending on the date chosen. For many foreign festival-goers, it's also a chance to combine the festival with a real sightseeing trip to Japan.
